Cathedral City, Calif. - The UNLV softball team (11-4) split its two games Friday at the Palm Springs Classic with a 9-8 win over Penn State and a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly. The Rebels were highly offensive in their win over the PSU Nittany Lions, but were held scoreless against the CP Mustangs. Thus far in the Classic, the Rebels sit 2-1 through three games with three remaining.
In game one, the Rebels cranked out 15 hits and scored nine runs in their 9-8 victory. UNLV scored at least one run in all but the fourth and seventh innings. The Rebels had to withstand a six-run fifth inning by the Nittany Lions, which evened the score at 8-8. Kendall Fearn made up for the poor inning with a solo shot to open up the sixth inning. Fearn's home run wound up being the game-winning run.
The Rebels opened up the game with two runs in the first off of three hits. Bri Bernardi was responsible for both runs, as she hit a two-run single to score Jaci Hull and Kelli Fangonilo from scoring position.
After Cal Poly pulled within one at 2-1, UNLV got the run back in the second on a single through the left side by Fangonilo to score Alyssia De La Torre from second.
The Mustangs got their second run in the second to bring the score to 3-2. UNLV countered with a run in the third on a run-scoring double down the right field line by Rosa Ordaz to score Caitlyn Paus.
In the fifth inning, the teams combined for 10 runs on nine hits. UNLV knocked in four of the 10 runs on two hits. The Rebels loaded the bases for De La Torre to plate two runners. De La Torre's single to left was misplayed by Penn State's leftfielder and rolled to the fence. De La Torre was credited with two RBI when Jenn Newman and Paus scored on the play. Brittany Freight wound up scoring with help from the error. Hull brought De La Torre home on a sacrifice fly to right.
The Nittany Lions knotted the game in their half of the fifth with six runs. Danielle Kinley began the come back with a three run shot and was quickly followed by Jenn Reynolds followed up Kinley with another home run. A single and a double by the PSU hitters brought home two more runs to even the score.
Fearn was the difference maker for UNLV as she opened the sixth with a blast over the left field fence.
The one-run lead was all that Heather Slettvet (3-1) would need, as she took the win for UNLV. Slettvet threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed only one hit, while striking out two and walking one.
Reynolds (1-1) suffered the loss for Penn State in 5.0 innings of work. She allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 14 hits, while striking out four and walking three.
Game two wasn't as successful for UNLV. The Rebels were only able to muster three hits off of Cal Poly's Robyn Kontra (2-0), while being shut out for the third time this season.
Cal Poly jumped out early with a solo home run by Lisa Modglin, the lead-off hitter. Modglin's shot sailed over the left field fence.
The Mustangs scored their second run in the third on a single by Melissa Pura.
Stephanie Bregante (3-2) took the loss for UNLV in 3.1 innings of work. Bregante allowed both runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Kontra was credited with the complete game win after striking out eight and walking two.
The Rebels return to action on Saturday against Notre Dame and Mississippi. The UND and UNLV will open up action at 10:30 a.m., while the Ole Miss game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
