WOLCOTT, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team concluded first-round action at the Golfweek Conference Challenge held at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colorado, in fifth place at 6-over par.
"The girls played really well today," said first-year head coach Amy Bush. "They really did a nice job with the game plan and found ways to get the ball in the right position to score."
Tulane and Virginia lead the 18-team field and are the only squads to come in under par at 1-under.
Senior Therese Koelbaek stands in a tie atop the leader board after firing a 3-under 69 in the first round. Her stellar opening-round play marks the second consecutive week she has occupied the top slot after one round of play. Birdies at 10, 12 and 14 got Koelbaek to 4-under before she bogeyed the 16th and parred out to finish the round.
"Therese is continuing her momentum from last week," added Bush. "She is really making good swings and playing smart golf. It is exciting to see her playing this well."
Alejandra Guacaneme, Katerina Prorokova and Kristen Schelling all shot 3-over 75 on the day and are tied for 27th while Mandi Incorvaia is tied for 56th after a 7-over 79.
"We set ourselves up in great position to move up the leader board tomorrow," said Bush.
Action resumes tomorrow morning with second round action while the 54-hole tournament will conclude Tuesday afternoon.
