Rebels Head Back To The Bay To Face Spartans

UNLV Baseball jumps back into Mountain West play with three games at San Jose State this weekend.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com - The UNLV Rebels will make their second trip to the Bay Area and third overall to the Golden State for a three-game series in Mountain West play against the San Jose State Spartans this weekend. The conference set will take place at Municipal Stadium, beginning Friday evening at 6:00 pm. Games two and three will start at 2:00 pm and 12:00 pm, respectively.

In their two previous trips to California, UNLV has gone 3-3 with a 1-2 showing against Stanford, which was ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper), and a 2-1 mark to open MW action at Fresno State.

This weekend's trek to San Jose comes in the midst of a stretch that will see UNLV play 15 of 18 games in Las Vegas at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels went 5-1 in a six-game span from March 5-13), and will look to continue their winning ways at home Tuesday when Cal State Northridge comes to town for a 2:05 pm tilt. UNR (March 22-24), UC Riverside (March 26-27) and New Mexico (March 29-31) will also travel to Southern Nevada to face the Scarlet & Gray in the next two weeks.

Historically speaking, the Rebels and Spartans have played a total of 71 times dating back to 1975, with the former leading the all-time series 42-29. UNLV won the last meeting, 9-2, which took place at the MW Championship on May 26, 2018; however, SJSU had claimed victory in five of seven prior to that last encounter.

ON DECK: The UNLV Rebels return to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium for their longest homestand of the season, a nine-game stretch against four different teams. UNLV kick off this stretch hosting Cal State Northridge on March 19 (Tuesday) at 2:05 pm, with three rivalry games against UNR from March 22-24. The Rebels continue the run the following week with visits from UC Riverside (March 26-27) and New Mexico (March 29-31).

SCORING EARLY & OFTEN: The UNLV Rebels' offense awoke against the Washington State Cougars earlier this week in the two-game, nonconference series in Las Vegas at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. UNLV produced 29 runs off of 30 hits and was credited with 26 RBI, as the squad notched double figures in all three categories against the Cougars.

The double-digit runs and RBI in the two games vs. WSU marked only the second and third times the Rebels had 10-plus in a contest this season. The 17- and 13-hit efforts Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, were the 11th and 12th instances that UNLV has surpassed 10 or more hits in a game.

Moreover, the Rebels hit .429 - 152 points more than WSU - as a team with a total of 30 hits, eight of which went for extra bases (six doubles and two home runs). Seven batters had at least three hits, while posting .333 or better batting averages. Four of those seven hit .500 or higher with and had a minimum of four hits.

LOOKING BACK: The UNLV Rebels swept the Pac-12's Washington Cougars in their two-game, midweek series in Las Vegas at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. UNLV won game one with ease, as the affair was halted after the third out was recorded in the top of the seventh and the Rebels leading 17-3. Game two was a back-and-forth contest; WSU led 4-3 through four frames, but UNLV answered with nine runs from the fifth on to run away with a five-run win, 12-7.

In game on, the Rebel offense recorded season highs in runs, hits, RBI and total bases, as every batter recorded at least one hit and one run in the run-rule affair that was halted at the conclusion of the top of the seventh inning.

UNLV's 17 runs came off of 16 RBI with four from Max Smith, three each from Jacob Godman and Chase Hanson, and two from both Bryson Stott and Edarian Williams.

The offense, as a whole, hit .500 for the game with 17 hits in 34 at-bats. Six of the hits went for extra bases, with four doubles and six home runs – both figures tied season highs. Additionally, all 10 batters scored a minimum of one run and seven of them had at least one RBI.

In game two, the Rebels got 11 of their 13 hits from the quintet of James Gamble, Grant Robbins, Smith, Stott and Jack-Thomas Wold. All five had multiple-hit efforts, while Robbins led all with his perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate that produced three RBI and one run. In all, the they scored nine of the team's 12 runs, with three of those coming from Gamble.
