Rebels Stay Home, Host Spartans Three Times

UNLV baseball and San Jose State to play Friday-Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels continue their five-game homestand at Earl E. Wilson Stadium this weekend with a three-game, Mountain West series against the San Jose State Spartans. Friday and Saturday's games between the Rebels and Spartans are scheduled to begin at 6:05 pm, while Sunday's finale is slated for a 1:05 pm first pitch.

This weekend's series will be the second go-round between UNLV (20-15, 7-8 MW) and SJSU (17-16, 11-4 MW), with the two squads playing three times in the Bay Area nearly one month ago. The Spartans swept the series in San Jose; however, all three contests were decided by one run: 2-1 on March 15, 6-5 on March 16, and 7-6 on March 17.

Since their final meeting in March, UNLV and SJSU have both played 14 games; however, the teams have gone in different directions with the former posting a 9-5 mark to the latter's 5-9. The Rebels followed the trip to Northern California by winning six of eight before their recent 3-3 run. The Spartans, on the other hand, went 2-2 immediately after hosting UNLV, but then lost six straight before their current 3-1 stretch.

Earlier this week, UNLV upset No. 9 Arizona State, 10-9, in come-from-behind fashion with six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, while SJSU surrendered 12 runs over the first three innings in a 13-2 loss at home to Portland.

Historically speaking, UNLV and SJSU have squared off a total of 74 times dating back to 1975. The Rebels leads the all-time series 42-32; however, the Spartans have crept closer since the 2017 campaign, winning nine of the last 13.

FOLLOW ALONG: Fans can follow this weekend's Mountain West contests between UNLV and SJSU through live stats, video and Twitter (@UNLVbaseball). The game will be streamed live via UNLV Athletics' YouTube channel, with links to it and statistics made available at UNLVRebels.com.

ON DECK: Following this weekend's series, UNLV will close out its five-game homestand Tuesday afternoon at 3:05 pm when Grand Canyon closes out the home-and-home, nonconference series between the Mountain West and WAC squads.

HITTIN' THE ROAD: UNLV has now played 13 games away from Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium, thus far, this season. As the calendar turned to April, the Scarlet & Gray's schedule became more road heavy, with the Rebels playing 15 of their final 26 outside of Southern Nevada from April 2 through May 12. The road swing began last week in Arizona against Grand Canyon and continued with three at Air Force in Colorado over the weekend. The Rebels will also take trips to Reno, Phoenix (Arizona State), Riverside (UC Riverside), Houston (Houston) and Albuquerque (New Mexico) through mid-May.

GOLDEN SPIKES WATCH LIST: UNLV baseball's Bryson Stott was named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list, announced by USA Baseball Wednesday

Stott is ranked in the top 100 of six NCAA Division I statistical categories through 35 games and eight-plus weeks of play. The junior shortstop, who serves as the team's leadoff batter, is third overall in base on balls (41), 13th in runs (40), 43rd in doubles (12), 58th in total bases (77) and 67th in on-base percentage (.489). Moreover, he sits in the top five of nine different categories in the Mountain West, including first in base on balls and runs.

Besides leading the Rebels in all of the aforementioned statistics, the graduate of Desert Oasis High School has also notched a .326 batting average with 43 hits. Nearly half of that haul has gone for extra bases (12 doubles, six home runs and two triples) and produced a .583 slugging percentage.

The midseason watch list is comprised of 40 of the nation's top amateur players from the high school and college ranks, and includes the addition of 21 athletes that have played their way into the mix since the preseason list was announced in early February.

Stott is the second Rebel to not only be named to the Golden Spikes Award's preseason watch list, but also the midseason watch list, joining fellow Las Vegan Erick Fedde. The Rebel alum and Las Vegas High School graduate was selected to both lists during his junior campaign in 2014, and was later selected by the Washington Nationals with the 18th overall pick in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft.

The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will continue to maintain a rolling list of players that will allow athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the season. USA Baseball will announce the semifinalists on May 15, and the finalists two weeks later on May 29. Fan voting will open May 29 at GoldenSpikesAward.com and run through June 10. The 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation on June 14.

He began the week with a two-hit effort at Grand Canyon with one run and one RBI. He had an RBI single that upped the Rebels' lead to 2-0 in the first inning, and later scored a run in the seventh.

In the three-game series at Air Force, the Desert Oasis High School graduate hit .357 with five hits, four of which were of the extra-base variety. In game one, he had one hit, one run and one RBI. In game two, he broke a 3-all tie with a three-run homer in the second inning and added an insurance run in the sixth in the contest that saw him knock in three RBI and score twice off of two hits. In the series finale, he played a role in five of the team's seven runs, as he scored once in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings and knocked in a pair in the fifth.
