UNLV Wins Silver State Series For Eighth Time In 11 Years

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Powered by its strong fall performances and a clean sweep on the basketball court, the UNLV Athletics Department is the winner of the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union for the eighth time in the award's 11-year history.

With all points now assigned, the Rebels took the all-encompassing competition with the Wolf Pack by the final score of 31.5-16.5. UNLV's total marked the third-highest by either side since the award was first calculated in 2013 when it was originally known as the Governor's Series.

The Rebels jumped out to a big lead early in the school year after wins in volleyball and women's soccer to go with a dramatic football victory that included ownership of the famed Fremont Cannon. UNLV earned a combined six points when its men's and women's basketball teams went 5-0 against the Wolf Pack on the hardwood, including the Mountain West champion Lady Rebels eliminating UNR in the conference tournament during the programs' third meeting of the season.

Also adding three points this year was women's swimming & diving followed by men's golf, women's tennis and baseball in the spring semester. Men's tennis split a pair of matchups to divide the points. UNLV also won three points from the competition's academic component with superior APR scores in a majority of its programs.

The Wolf Pack compiled the bulk of its wins in the running sports, taking a combined nine points from cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field. UNR's other points came from the sports of softball, women's golf and the split in men's tennis.

"Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and staff for bringing the Silver State Series trophy back to Southern Nevada in resounding fashion," UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper said. "It's been a memorable year, punctuated by a 5-0 record in basketball. We appreciate America First Credit Union for supporting the competition between our state's only two Division I programs and look forward to gearing up again next season."
