Baseball Announces Date and Time for Alumni Game

LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The UNLV baseball team will play the Alumni on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The 1999 Rebels will play former players which will include current professional players. The list of the top players will include: Brian Boehringer (1998 national league champion San Diego Padres), T.J. Mathews (Oakland A's) and Todd Stottlemyre (Arizona Diamondbacks). Other players scheduled to play include: Bob Ayrault (formerly of the Philadelphia Phillies), Stacy Kleiner (St. Louis Cardinals), Tom LaRosa (Minnesota Twins) and Nate Yeskie (Minnesota Twins).

The first alumni game of the day on Jan. 16 will feature a 10 a.m. "oldtimers" contest of former Rebels. The 1999 baseball team, under third year head coach Rod Soesbe, will begin practice on Monday, Jan. 11. UNLV will open the 1999 season on Friday, Feb. 5, against UC Santa Barbara at 3:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium.

The UNLV baseball program will hold the 2nd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Palm Valley with a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start. The event is a major fund raiser for UNLV baseball. The cost is $1,300 for a foursome for local companies and corporations. Scheduled to play in the golf tournament will be Marty Barrett, Mike Maddux and former Yankee great Mel Stottlemyre, Sr., who is currently the pitching coach of the world champion New York Yankees. The professional baseball players who will appear in the alumni game will also participate in the golf tournament.
