NCAA Probation Notification
As of July 2, 2024, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (“UNLV”) is serving a two-year probationary period, until July 1, 2026, as a result of NCAA violations that occurred in the Track and Field program under the former head coach. Please note this probationary period does not include a postseason ban or reduction in scholarships.
Upon discovering the violations, UNLV was proactive in reporting them to the NCAA and worked collaboratively with the NCAA to fully investigate the violations. The violations discovered include:
- Impermissible benefits provided to student-athletes, which were arranged and directly provided by the former head coach;
- Exceeding countable coach limits when the former head coach allowed a volunteer coach to receive impermissible compensation and allowed a non coaching staff member to provide instruction to student-athletes;
- Arranging and providing NCAA banned substances to student-athletes by the former head coach;
- Violation of ethical conduct by the former head coach when he instructed student-athletes to provide false and misleading information to the compliance office; and
- Lack of head coach responsibility by the former head coach.
As a result of the above violations, the NCAA and UNLV agreed on the following penalties:
- Two years of probation;
- A fine of $5,000 plus 2% of the women's track and field budget and an additional fine associated with the ineligible competition;
- 10-year show cause order for the former head coach;
- Public reprimand through the release of the negotiated resolution agreement;
- A reduction in track and field countable coaches by one for 12 practices during the 2024-2025 season; and
- A vacation of all records in which student-athletes competed while ineligible. Records will be vacated in the 2023 Track Outdoor season.
As part of the probationary period, UNLV is required to notify prospects in the sport of track and field of the probation and provide them with the above details of the related violations. Additionally, UNLV will develop a comprehensive educational program for the university and complete reports for the NCAA showing the progression made.
It should be noted that the NCAA found that UNLV has robust compliance monitoring systems that exceed industry standards to deter and detect violations and that UNLV modeled exemplary cooperation by embracing its responsibility and exceeding expectations resulting in a consummate collaborative investigation.
