MISSION
The UNLV Sport Psychology department, an extension of UNLV Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), is committed to fostering optimal health and well-being for our UNLV student-athlete community. Our goal is to prepare them for a full and productive experience on and off the field. Our mission is to support UNLV student-athletes in their pursuit of personal and performance excellence through culturally relevant mental health services. We are dedicated to promoting resilience, psycho-socioemotional development, and holistic wellness. UNLV Sport Psychology collaborates closely with various departments within the athletic department, including academic support services, sports medicine, sport nutrition, sports science, and more to ensure total wellness for student-athletes, faculty, and staff.

CULTURAL SPORT PSYCHOLOGY
Sport psychology focuses on enhancing psychological skills to boost athletic performance. Cultural sport psychology advocates for a culturally responsive approach that develops self-awareness, confidence, and resilience by acknowledging and leveraging cultural diversity. This method recognizes our student-athletes' diverse backgrounds as vital strengths to be cultivated for elite performance.

At UNLV, we consider a wide range of cultural characteristics, including values, beliefs, behaviors, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and gender identity. These elements are integral to understanding and supporting each athlete's unique needs. Our commitment to inclusivity, ethics, and a holistic approach ensures that we address the complete well-being of our athletes.

SERVICES PROVIDED

MENTAL HEALTH SCREENINGS
In accordance with NCAA Mental Health Best Practice Guidelines, all incoming student-athletes will complete a mental health screening with a member of the Sport Psychology team. Implementing mental health screenings as a routine part of our athletic program helps normalize mental health care, reduce stigma, and encourage athletes to seek help when needed. Mental health screenings can identify mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and stress before they become severe. Early detection of these concerns allows for timely intervention and support, reducing the risk of long-term problems.

MENTAL HEALTH & PERFORMANCE COUNSELING
UNLV Sport Psychology offers student-athletes the opportunity to engage in individual counseling sessions with mental health professionals. These one-on-one appointments provide a safe space for athletes to discuss their concerns or areas where they seek improvement. Sessions are offered on an ongoing basis, as needed, and typically last between thirty and sixty minutes. To accommodate different preferences and needs, appointments are available both in-person and via telehealth.

Student-athletes seek individual counseling for various reasons, ranging from managing stress and enhancing performance to building confidence and addressing personal issues. No matter the reason, our team is here to support and guide you through your journey. Common reasons student-athletes may seek counseling services include, but are not limited to:

Anxiety

Communication with Teammates / Coaches

Eating Concerns / Loss of Appetite

TEAM TALKS & COACHING CONSULTATIONS
Team talks offer an opportunity for entire teams to gather and engage in discussions and activities together. These sessions can cover a range of topics, including stress management, team cohesion, communication skills, and mental resilience. By participating in team talks, athletes can build a supportive community, enhance team dynamics, and develop skills that contribute to their overall success.

Coaching consultations are tailored for coaches who want to better understand and support the mental health needs of their athletes. During these sessions, coaches can discuss strategies for fostering a positive team environment, addressing mental health concerns, and integrating mental skills training into their coaching practices. These consultations help coaches develop a holistic approach to athlete development, promoting both physical and mental well-being.

STUDENT-ATHLETE WELLNESS GROUP

The UNLV Student-Athlete Wellness group plays a vital role in our campus community by tackling the stigma associated with mental health among student-athletes. The group includes current UNLV student-athletes who are dedicated to advocating for mental health resources. Their mission is to promote awareness about mental health issues, provide valuable tips and resources, and cultivate a sense of belonging among athletes.

Central to their efforts is the goal of building a supportive community where athletes feel comfortable seeking help when needed. They actively engage with student-athletes through platforms like Instagram (@unlvathletewellness) and Twitter (@unlvsawellness), sharing insights, tips, and fostering discussions around mental well-being.
