ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The top-ranked UNLV golf team followed up its second-round 19-under-par score with a third-round 12-under-par 276 to increase its lead to ten shots after three rounds at 1998 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at the University of New Mexico's Championship Golf Course (par 72, 2,748 yards) Friday.
UNLV, which is 35-under par for the tournament, shot the lowest round of the day for the second consecutive day.
"It's not over yet," UNLV Head Coach Dwaine Knight said when asked if he thought his team's lead was safe heading into Saturday's final round. "I like the position we are in, but there are a lot of good teams out there and we need to play great tomorrow. We have been playing well and attacking the course. It's time to let the players go. They have really put themselves in a great position and it's up to them now."
Clemson and Oklahoma State each shot 10-under par for the third round and are in second and third, respectively. Clemson is 10 shots back at 25-under par, while Oklahoma State is 22-under. Georgia Tech is 20-under in fourth place and UCLA rounds out the top five at 16-under.
James McLean of Minnesota shot a third-round 65, the day's lowest round, and is tied with defending champion Charles Warren of Clemson for the individual lead at 14-under.
Chris Berry and Bill Lunde each shot third-round scores of 67 for UNLV and are tied for sixth place at 11-under 205, three shots behind the leaders.
"There is still a lot of golf to be played," Lunde said. "Everyone will be gunning for us, going for it and trying to birdie everything. They have nothing to lose, so we just have to go out there and continue to play our game like we have been."
Charley Hoffman shot a third-round 71 and sits in an 11th place tie at seven-under 209. Jeremy Anderson shot even-par and is tied for 17th at five-under 211.
"It has just been amazing the last two days," Anderson said. "Today could have been a letdown, but we talked about it last night. There is no letting up out here. We knew we needed to stay aggressive and I'm sure we will have the same game plan tomorrow."
Scott Lander currently sits in a tie for 36th at two-under 214 after shooting a third-round 71.
The tournament concludes Saturday with 18 holes.
