COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Hydianne Harper highlighted the Rebels' day at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships by finishing in first in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Harper's time of 6.73 set a new WAC indoor meet record, topping the previous record of Melinda Sergent of UTEP set in 1995 (6.77). The time is the second-best time by a WAC runner this season and automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 5-7. Ayana Hutchinson was a provisional qualifier with her fifth place finish of 6.84.
Harper also took a first place finish in the 200 meters, finishing with a time of 23.67. This time was the lowest of WAC runners this season and also qualifies her for the NCAAs. The finals of the two events will take place tomorrow, the final day of the WAC Championships.
As a team UNLV finished in 10th place, scoring two points of Laren Parker's seventh place finish in the long jump. The Championships continue tomorrow, concluding with the finals of the sprint events and the shot put, where Melissa Haigler will look to better her provisional qualifying mark of 49-8.5.
