CARY, N.C. - The top-ranked UNLV men's golf team held off a fierce third-round rally by Wake Forest to capture the team title at the BELLSOUTH Yellow Pages Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,829-yard MacGregor Downs Country Club Saturday.

After leading the tournament by nine strokes after two rounds of play, UNLV (287-283-298-868, four-over par) shot a final-round 298, holding on for the one-shot victory. The win extended the Rebels best-ever season victory total to six. It also marked UNLV's 10th top-five finish in 12 events this season.

Wake Forest (296-286-287-869) shot a third-round-low total of 287 to make its charge. North Carolina (293-291-291-875) finished third, Duke (291-297-291-879) finished fourth and Clemson (293-290-297-880) finished in fifth.

UNLV sophomore Jeremy Anderson (67-72-71-210, six-under par) became the first Rebel two win two events in a season since Chris Riley (3) and Ed Fryatt (2) accomplished the feat during 1993-94. Anderson shot a final-round 71 to capture the individual crown. Anderson's first win of the year was at the GolfWorld Invitational in November.

Wake Forest's Todd Lynch (71-70-71-212) finished two shots back in second. UNLV had two other players finish in the top 10 with junior Charley Hoffman (72-68-76-216) tying for fifth and senior Bill Lunde (73-71-75-219) finishing 10th.

Other Rebels competing were Scott Lander (75-72-76-223/tied for 23rd) and Chris Berry (77-74-77-228/42nd).

UNLV's next action will be April 27-29 at the WAC Championship at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, Calif.
