LAS VEGAS - The Rebel swimming and diving team was back in action today as Northern Arizona traveled to Las Vegas for the Rebels home opener in Buchanan Natatorium. Both the men's and women's teams were victorious, winning by the scores of 184-109 and 175-123, respectively.
Both the men and women captured first place in each of the swimming events. In men's action it was Tomasz Piotrowski and Petr Kratochvil leading the way with two victories a piece in their given events. Piotrowski captured both the 100 back (51.82) and the 200 back (1:51.79) while Kratochvil swam to a first place finishes in the 200 breast (2:07.72) and the 400 IM (4:01.85). Sophomore Andrew Livingston continued his dominance in the 200 butterfly as he clocked 1:50.10, over two seconds faster than his nearest competitor. All-American Erik Scalise won the 200 free (1:41.21). Michael Short took the 50 free (21.30) and Michael Rosen swept the distance events with victories in the 500 free (4:34.29) and the 1000 free (9:22.67).
The women's team also cruised to victory with pairs of victories by Ashleigh Crowder, Victoria Naess, Erica Korb and Janel Frei. Crowder took both backstroke events, clocking 58.32 in the 100 and 2:07.54 in the 200. Naess led the way in the sprint freestyle events with first place results in the 100 (53.22) and the 200 (1:54.60). Freshman Erica Korb finished with times of 1:05.06 in the 100 breast and 2:21.87 in the 200 breast en route to her two victories, and Janel Frei took the 1000 free (10:17.18) and the 400 IM (4:27.01).
The Rebels next action is December 18-21 as UNLV hosts it's annual Winter Invite. Over 600 athletes will compete in this years events, including a number of 1996 Olympians.
