Swimming Concludes Second Day of Competition at Winter Invite

LAS VEGAS - The second day of competition in UNLV's annual Winter Invite was highlighted by the performance of Natalie Coughlin of the Terrapins club team in California. Coughlin cruised to an American record in the 100 back with a time of 52.55, shattering the old mark of 52.71. She also swam to a first place finish in the 100 butterfly as she clocked 52.91. The 16-year old Coughlin will have an opportunity to break two more American records in the next two days when she competes in the 200 back and the 400 IM.

The Rebels had a strong showing in second-day competition as well. All-American Erik Scalise took first place in the 200 IM, recording a time of 1:51.76. Petr Kratochvil finished third in the same race with his time of 1:54.14. Michael Rosen also swam to a first place finish in the 1000 freestyle (9:21.62), outpacing his nearest competitor by five seconds and former Rebel Mike Mintenko finished first in the 100 fly (49.07). UNLV's Ashleigh Crowder finished in sixth place in 100 back with a time of 58.17. Freshman Ericka Korb also took sixth place, clocking a time of 2:07.53 in the 200 individual medley. Korb also had a fifth place result in the 100 fly at 56.88.

1996 gold and silver medalist Amanda Beard finished in second place in the 200 IM (2:01.11) and in fourth place in the 100 fly ( 54.91). The Winter Invite runs through Monday with two sessions a day, starting at 9:00am and 5:00pm.
