Netters Almost Sweep in First Day of ITA

LAS VEGAS - Five of six UNLV men's singles players and two of three Rebel doubles teams moved on to Thursday's second round at the 1998 ITA Regional Championships being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

In Wednesday's first-round singles action, Danny Erez defeated Dean Kimoto of Eastern Washington 6-0, 6-2. Tyler Roberts won his match over Ryan Lutz of Denver, 7-6, 7-6. Damu Bobb swept Yven Heine of New Mexico State, 6-1, 7-6, and Gregor Skorin topped Ryan Maclaurin of Weber State 6-1, 6-1.

Fifth-seeded Nenad Zivkovic earned a first-round bye. Among Rebel entries, only Adam Thurgood, who lost to Justin Beverley of Montana, moved to the consolation bracket.

In doubles, UNLV's advancing teams were Erez and Roberts, who defeated Eddie Brisbois and Tad Kincaid of Idaho 8-2, and the top-seeded duo of Zivkovic and Skorin, who received a first-day bye.

The five-round event, which features players from 20 teams, continues Thursday. The finals are scheduled for Sunday.
