LAS VEGAS - Only three of six UNLV men's singles players and no doubles teams competed because of inclement weather Thursday during the second day of the 1998 ITA Regional Championships being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
After a full round of consolation singles in the morning, just more than half of the main draw singles matches were completed before the rains came to campus. Rebel Adam Thurgood advanced to the second round of consolation play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mark Marlowe of Idaho State.
In the main draw, Rebel players won both of their completed matches. Fifth-seeded Nenad Zivkovic easily defeated Rene Ramirez of Air Force, 6-2, 6-1, and Danny Erez swept Jeff Ruedy of Nevada, Reno 6-0, 6-2. Both players advanced to the third round.
Two rounds of doubles also were postponed. Play will resume, weather permitting, at 8 a.m. Friday. The five-day event, which features players from 20 teams, is scheduled to be completed with the finals on Sunday.
