Tishler Earns League Honor

April 13, 1999

LAS VEGAS - UNLV men's tennis star Asaf Tishler has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Tishler, who is 19-5 in singles and 14-6 in doubles overall this season, went a combined 4-0 over the weekend in leading the Rebels to two road wins over higher-ranked WAC opponents. Ranked 31st, he upset 27th-ranked Gareth Williams of Tulsa and then downed 65th-ranked Pepe Caballero of New Mexico. Tishler also teamed with partner Gregor Skorin to win two doubles matches.

The senior has won 15 straight singles matches, only losing one set during that streak, and has taken 26 of his last 28 singles and doubles matches combined.

A native of Tel Aviv, Israel, Tishler has now won the league honor four times in his career, including once last month.

UNLV (9-8) will complete its regular season with a match at San Diego State Saturday.
