April 21, 1998LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's tennis team, which moved up five spots in the national rankings that were released Tuesday, travels to this week's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Championship in Tulsa, Okla.
The Rebels (10-9), who improved to No. 35 in the nation, are expected to receive one of three byes in the 13-team tournament. With a bye, UNLV would open play Thursday with one dual match.
The Rebels are led by junior Asaf Tishler (21-10), who dropped eight spots to No. 43 in the ITA Rankings. The top Rebel doubles team of freshmen Nenad Zivkovic and Gregor Skorin (9-7) dropped six places to 46th.
UNLV is one of four WAC teams currently ranked among the top 50 who will compete this week. No. 27 SMU, No. 40 Tulsa and No. 43 TCU are the others. The single-elimination tournament will conclude with the championship match on Saturday.
Forced indoors because of bad weather, UNLV finished second in its first WAC tournament last year in Fort Worth, Texas, when it blew a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 to host TCU.
Also in Tuesday's rankings, the UNLV women's team moved up four spots to No. 38. The Lady Rebels open play in the women's WAC tournament on April 29 in Fort Worth.
