USC Slips by Washington to Advance

May 15, 1998

LAS VEGAS - Second-seeded Southern California swept doubles play to complete a furious rally and defeat unseeded Washington 5-4 in the first round of the NCAA women's tennis regional being played on the campus of UNLV Friday.

The Women of Troy, ranked 21st, improved to 12-10 while the Huskies, ranked 54th, finished the season 12-8.

UW stormed out to a 4-2 lead with singles victories by Kristina Kraszewski, Zuzana Stunova, Erica Stolof and Peggy Wu. The Huskies, however, were then shut out of doubles competition.

"USC played well in doubles to come back and beat us," Washington Head Coach Patty McCain said. "We played well, the best we've played all year and that's all you can ask for."

USC, which was playing its first-ever match in Las Vegas, had beaten UW 6-2 just last month.

"We were very fortunate," USC Head Coach Richard Gallien said. "Washington has nothing but class. Patty has done a great job in her first year. We didn't do a great job in the singles. Nine out of 10 of those matches you lose. We were due to win one like this"

USC next meets unseeded San Diego State in the semifinals, which was a 5-2 winner over San Diego on Friday.

"We haven't had one lead in the last two hours so I haven't had time to think about tomorrow," Gallien said. "I just hope to do better in the singles."
