Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Saint Mary's sent 13 men to the plate in the top of the first inning and roughed up Rebel starter Joe Maruffi for eight runs en route to a 13-6 win over UNLV at Wilson Stadium Sunday.

The Rebels (0-2) never recovered from the Gaels' (3-2) explosive start, which saw them collect nine hits and three doubles.

The Gaels were equally tough on defense as starting pitcher Mike Byer cruised through seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four.

UNLV got the bats hot in the eighth, rallying for six runs in the inning, but not nearly enough to overcome the 12-0 lead that Saint Mary's had built.

The Gaels' first baseman Matt Yourkin enjoyed a 3-for-6 day, collecting a single, double and home run in his first three appearances.

Leading UNLV at the plate was Denny Seybert, who hit a two-RBI triple in the eighth.

The two clubs will complete their season series on Monday at Wilson Stadium with first pitch slated at 1:05 p.m.
