UNLV Displays Strong Showing In Florida

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV swim teams traveled to Boca Raton, Fla. to compete in a double-dual meet at the Florida Atlantic Invitational. Both the men's and women's teams faced schools from Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Florida Atlantic. The men's team defeated Nebraska (58-57) and Florida Atlantic (67-48), but fell to Texas A&M (65-50). The women won two of three as well, defeating Nebraska (62-53) and Florida Atlantic (90-25), but also losing to Texas A&M (71-44). The men finished third overall with a score of 239 while the women placed second, finishing with 288 points.

Jacint Simon (Kecskemet, Hungary) posted a first-place finish in the 800 free with a time of 7:23.57. Bobby Middleton (Cathedral City, Calif.) swam to victory in both the 50-breast (25.98) and 150 breast (1:30.10). The Rebel men also had strong performances by Michael Short (San Jose, Calif.), placing second in the 50 free with a time of 21.11 and Piotr Kroyskow (Stargard Szuzecinsla), finishing second in the 100 free with a time of 45.88.

Lorena Diaconescu (Bucharest, Romania) swam to first-place finishes in the 150 free with a time of 1:20.19 and the 100 free (51.24). Dana Penn (Plano, Texas) had a strong showing in the 800 free, finishing fourth with a mark of 8:13.33 and the 300 free where she placed second with a time of 2:26.35. The Rebels posted first through third finishes in the 50 breast with Madalina Tin (Bucharest, Romania) placing first, Ericka Korb (Scottsdale, Arizona) coming in second, and Carrie Knopp (Aurora, Oregon) completing the sweep. Sabrina Ferrari (Carmichael, Calif.) finished strong in the 50 fly placing second with a time of 26.33.

The Rebel swim teams will return to the Buchanan Natatorium on January 29 when they will face off against Mountain West rival Air Force. Competition will begin at 2:00pm.
