The No. 9 UNLV golf team continues its 2000 fall season at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. The 54-hole tournament will be hosted by the University of Alabama at the Old Overton Club (par 71, 6,936 yards), on Monday, Oct. 16 and Tuesday, Oct. 17.
The tournament features an impressive field, including all 10 of the qualifiers for the 2000 NCAA Championships. All but one school of the 12-team field is ranked among the top 25 in the latest edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
Along with UNLV, the field includes Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, Arizona, Auburn, BYU, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Houston, Oklahoma State and Southern California.
Representing UNLV at the Jerry Pate will be a young lineup, including junior Justin Lee, who makes his UNLV debut, sophomores Calvin Kupeyan and Tyler Mays, and freshmen James Oh and Travis Whisman.
The Rebels tied for first place at the 1999 Jerry Pate Intercollegiate (283-275-277--835) before falling to Clemson in a two-hole playoff. Adam Scott led the way with a nine-under par 204 to finish fourth overall while Michael Kirk tied for seventh at six-under. Both Kupeyan and Mays have experience at Old Overton. Kupeyan finished in a tie for 18th, carding a two-over par (71-71--73--215) last year while Mays (76-76-68--220) shot a final-round 68 to lead the Rebels' charge to the playoff.
In its last outing, UNLV battled poor weather conditions to finish 13th of 16 at The Preview By PING in Durham, N.C. Oh (69-75--144), in just his second tournament as a collegian, led the Rebels, firing even par to finish tied for fifth-place overall at the rain-shortened competition.
Following the Jerry Pate, UNLV will have about two weeks to prepare for the Golf World Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C., on Nov. 3-5. On Nov. 11-12, the Rebels will conclude the fall season, competing at the College Golf Foundation Match Play Team Championship.
