Swimmers Struggle At Arizona State

TEMPE, AZ - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams start the season 0-1, falling to Arizona State on Friday. The 13th ranked ASU men defeated the Rebels 163-80, while the No. 19 Sun Devil women defeated UNLV 177-60.

Junior Lorena Diaconescu turned in the top Rebel performance, winning both the 200 (1:50.93) and 500 (4:57.74) free.

Individually, Madalina Tin was the women's second leading scorer with six points. She placed second in the 100 free (53.11) and fourth in the 50 free (24.54).

Freshman Julie Unrau added five points with a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:05.70) and a fourth-place finish in the 200 free (1:57.36). Senior Carrie Knopp also turned in a third-place finish in the 200 breast (2:23.79).

Diver Anna Zehnder placed third in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.

Piotr Krzyskow led the men's team, taking first place in the 50 free with a time of 20.64 and second in the 100 free (45.53). Andrew Livingston won the 200 fly in 1:49.55.

Doug Wake and Michael Short scored six points apiece for the Rebels. Wake took second in the 200 fly (1:53.67) and fourth place in the 200 free (1:41.46), while Short took third in both the 50 (20.97) and 100 (46.14) free.

Paul Valen took second in the 500 freestyle (4:46.70). Michael Soria, Jacint Simon and Andrew Kapchinske each turned in third-place finishes. Soria recorded 9:41.92 in the 1000 freestyle, while Simon came in at 1:40.58 in the 200 free. Kapchinske finished the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.48.

Arizona State was led by Claire Hedenskog, who won the 50 (24.13) and 100 (51.98) free, and diver Natalie Burgress, also a double winner for the women. The Sun Devil men were led by freshman Rich Jacobs and All-American seniors Marc Briggs and Scott Von Schoff.

UNLV hosts Utah on November 10 at the Whitney Ranch Recreation and Aquatic Center in Henderson, NV. Competition is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
