Men's Swimming And Diving Team Wins Husker Shootout

LINCOLN, NE - The UNLV men's swimming and diving team edged out host Nebraska to win the Husker Shootout team title on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Center Pool. The Rebel women's team finished third.

The UNLV men entered the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the meet, tied with Nebraska at 328 points to force a dramatic showdown.

The Rebel relay team of Mike Short, Tommy Zauder, Jacint Simon and Piotr Krzyskow won the relay with a time of 3:01.16 to defeat Nebraska's squad of Peter Fry, Anthony Rogis, Scott Schultz and Javior Botello by three one-hundredths of a second (3:01.43).

UNLV won the Husker Shootout with 344 points, just ahead of host Nebraska (340). Washington finished third with a score of 290 points, followed by Kenyon College (270) and Drury (243).

Individual day three winners for the Rebels were Jacint Simon, who won the 1650 free (16:00.99), Piotr Krzyskow, who took first in the 100 free (45.15), and Andrew Livingston, who won the 200 fly in 1:46.97 - nearly five full seconds ahead of the competition.

The UNLV women's team tallied 306 points to finish in third place. The Husker women finished first with a team score of 363, well ahead of second-place Nevada (325).

The Rebel women won the 400 free relay in 3:32.07 with the team of Madalina Tin, Julie Unrau, Lorena Diaconescu and Alyson Noble.

Individually, the UNLV women's team did not fare as well. Lorena Diaconescu finished second in the 100 free (51.56), just one-tenth of a second behind Nebraska's Beth Kariaca (51.46).

Carrie Knopp took second in the 200 breast (2:23.25), while Julie Unrau was third in the 200 fly (2:06.95).

The UNLV men's and women's swimming teams next travel to BYU on November 25. The diving teams will compete at the BYU Diving Invitational December 1-2.
