Women's Swimming Defeats BYU in Dual Competition, Men Struggle

PROVO, UT - The UNLV women's swimming team defeated BYU 130-113 on Saturday night at the Richards Building Pool in Provo, UT.

The meet came down to the final event on the women's side with the team of Alyson Noble, Criselda Dizon, Sabrina Ferrari and Madalina Tin winning the 400 free relay by less than four tenths of a second (3:33.63 - 3:33.97).

UNLV's Lindsey Whipple, Lorena Diaconescu, Tin and Ferrari began the meet by winning the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:53.22.

Tera Sherard and Dana Penn went one and two in the 1000 free with times of 10:40.11 and 10:45.12 respectively.

Diaconescu also won the 200 free (1:51.04), with Noble coming in second in 1:54.95.

Julie Unrau took the 200 IM (2:08.79) and the 200 fly (2:07.87), while Diaconescu added a 100 free victory in a time of 51.97.

Anna Zender finished second in the 1-meter diving competition, scoring 140.00.

The men's team, missing a few of its top relay and individual swimmers, struggled against the Cougars, falling 143-98. Andrew Livingston, David Schick and Lucas Richmond all stayed in Las Vegas due to illness.

Paul Valen and Michael Soria finished 1-2 in the 1000 free in times of 9:39.73 and 9:44.89 respectively.

Piotr Krzyskow took the 50 free (21.16) and 100 free (46.06), while Doug Wake and Jacint Simon finished 1-2 in the 200 fly (1:52.52 - 1:54.63).

The dual season continues for the Rebels when the swimming and diving teams travel to Nevada, Reno on December 12. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. The diving teams will return to Provo, UT on December 1 for the BYU Diving Invitational.
