LAS VEGAS - Lewis-Clark State College, a perennial NAIA powerhouse, defeated the UNLV baseball team, 10-1, behind an 11-strikeout performance by lefty Mike Chavez (1-0) Tuesday at Wilson Stadium.
Chavez, who came into the game in relief of starter Nick Stelzner in the third inning, got the victory after pitching 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing three hits and a walk to go with his 11 strikeouts.
The Warriors (3-1) backed Chavez with plenty of offense, collecting 14 hits off four different UNLV pitchers. Jason Ellison went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with a double.
The Rebels (3-6) were led by centerfielder John Cruz, who recorded two of UNLV's four hits. They also welcomed third baseman Brad Maloff to the field for the first time this season. Maloff was stellar defensively, knocking down everything and throwing out six batters.
UNLV starter Jared Bonnell (0-1) allowed only three earned runs over the first five innings, but was tagged with the loss after the Rebels failed to produce offensively.
Lewis-Clark State will remain in Las Vegas for the finale of the two-game series, set to begin Wednesday at 3:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium.
