OKLAHOMA CITY - The UNLV men's and women's swim teams both surged into second place respectively after the completion of day two's competition. The men are 76 points behind BYU while the women trail the Cougars by only 21.5. The Rebels were victorious in the men's and women's 500-Free, 200-IM, 400 R-Medley, the men's 50-Free and placed third in the women's 50-Free.
Lorena Diaconescu and Jacint Simon both controlled the 500-Free events swimming a 4:49.50 and 4:21.91. Diaconescu set a school record in her effort today and both made the B-cut for the NCAA Championships, but need to make at least another B-cut to qualify. Erica Korb and David Schick both placed first in the 200-IM. Korb swam a time of 2:05.23 and Schick led the men with a time of 1:50.99. Kelly Goddard swam to a third-place finish in the 50-Free posting a time of 23.86. Garrett Wood earned a B-cut by swimming a 20.31 in the men's 50-Free and also broke a UNLV school record.
The men's and women's relay squads swept the 400 R-Medley events. The women's team of Ashleigh Crowder, Ericka Korb, Sabrina Ferrari, and Lorena Diaconescu earned a first-place finish with a time of 3:46.57. The men also finished first with a mark of 3:17.57. David Schick, Bobby Middleton, Piotr Krzyskow, and Michael Short made the B-cut of the NCAAs for their top time of the day.
Competition continues tomorrow at the Aquatic Center on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College and will end on Saturday, February 19.
