LAS VEGAS - Chad Qualls pitched a complete game shutout to lead Nevada, Reno to a 5-0 win over the UNLV baseball team in the second round of the Coors Desert Classic Friday night at Wilson Stadium.Qualls scattered eight Rebel hits and at one point retired 11 straight batters to give UNR (9-6) its first victory in the tournament. The Rebels (4-11) suffered their first setback of the tourney after a 12-6 win over Santa Clara on Thursday night.
Senior DH Trent Kitsch collected the only UNLV hit through the first five innings and went 2-for-4 on the evening.
The Wolf Pack were paced offensively by catcher Matt Ortiz, who hit a solo home run with two out in the fifth inning, and DH Bo Bryant, who went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Freshman lefty Giovanni Pupo was tagged with his third loss of the year despite allowing just two earned runs over eight innings.
Both UNR and UNLV are 1-1 through two days of tournament play and are included in a four-way tie for third place. Cal State Northridge leads the tourney with a 2-0 mark after defeating West Virginia 6-4 on Friday afternoon. Oregon State won both of its games on Thursday, but dropped a 12-10 heartbreaker in 12 innings to Santa Clara on Friday to fall into second place. Michigan State and Santa Clara round out the 1-1 log jam.
The Rebels will play two games on Saturday. They will face Michigan State at 1:30 at Wilson Stadium before squaring off against Oregon State in the following game.
