COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV sophomore sprinter Michele Davis (Lansing, MI/Sexton) has been named the Mountain West Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Davis earned the honor after an impressive performance at the Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno, NV last weekend in which she won both the 200 and 400 meters. She finished the 200 in 24 seconds, which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. That time also marks a career best for Davis, who had previously recorded her best mark of :24.39 at the WAC Indoor Championships last year.
Her victory in the 400 came in 55 seconds, 2.4 seconds faster than the rest of the field. Both of her marks are tops in the conference this season.
A qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400 meters last year, Davis was chosen as the WAC Freshman of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Davis' award marked the second straight week that UNLV captured the honor, as teammate Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, TN/Brainerd) was honored last week.
The Rebels head into their final training meet before the conference championships this week. Some members of the team will travel to Indianapolis, IN, to compete in the Cannon V Classic while the rest of the squad will return to Reno to perform in the Bill Cosby Invitational.
