With just a little more than two weeks remaining before the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, the UNLV women's track and field team is heading down the backstretch of the indoor season. The team will split up this week, sending athletes to both the Cannon V Classic in Indianapolis, IN and the Bill Cosby Invitational in Reno, NV.
The Rebels are coming off improved performances at the Wolf Pack Invitational, held in Reno last weekend. Two athletes, Ayanna Hutchinson and Michele Davis clocked NCAA provisional qualifying times in their respective events. Hutchinson pulled out a victory in the 55 meters (6.80) while Davis won both the 200 (24.00) and 400 meters (55.00).
Senior All-American Jessica Marable returned to the lineup last week and finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 48-6.25. She is looking for a return trip to the NCAA Championships this year and has just two meets remaining to earn a qualifying mark.
Senior Stephanie Davidson also captured a victory, winning the mile run, while the Rebels' 4X400 relay team beat the field by two full seconds.
High jumpers Emily McCarter and Tianika Sharrieff both posted marks that rank among UNLV's top five all-time indoor performances. McCarter cleared 5-5 in the Rebels' season opener at Air Force, which ranks fourth in UNLV history. Sharrieff follows with the fifth-best height of 5-3.75.
Pole vaulter Charlotte McGee broke her own school record of 10-0, clearing 10-6. That leap matches her personal best and sets a new indoor standard for the Rebels.
This weekend will be the final competition for UNLV prior to the conference championships, which will be held in Colorado Springs, CO, from Feb. 24-26.
