PROVO, Utah - UNLV freshman Chantel Yates scored 3,121 points and leads the heptathlon competition after the first day of the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Through four events, Yates holds a slight 18-point lead over BYU's Anna-Lee Walcott, who sits in second place with 3,103 points. Utah's Erianne Allen is in third (2,979) followed by Rebel senior Heather Steadham (2,838).
Yates posted season-best marks in two of the four events, clearing 5-1.75 in the high jump and clocking 24.93 in the 200 meters. If she can match her season bests in the heptathlon's final three events on Thursday, she would post a total of 5,352 and break her own school freshman record in the event.
The Mtn. West Championships will continue through Saturday, with the conclusion of the heptathlon on Thursday and field and running events beginning on Friday.
