LAS VEGAS - The UNLV golf team has completed its 2000 fall schedule following the announcement of its selection to participate in the College Golf Foundation Match Play Team Championships to be played at the West Bay Golf Club in Esotero, Fla., from Nov. 10-12, head coach Dwaine Knight announced today.
The Rebels earn the invitation by virtue of their sixth-place team finish at the 2000 NCAA Golf Championships and their No. 7 final ranking in the CGF MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
This event will feature eight of the country's top-10 ranked teams, according to the final 2000 rankings. The five members of each team will play singles matches against their opponent to determine the winning team. The winners will advance while the losing teams will go into a consolation bracket. Each team is guaranteed three matches.
Along with the Rebels, the field will include No. 1 Georgia Tech, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Houston, No. 5 Northwestern, No. 6 Arizona, No. 8 Texas and No. 9 Georgia.
The Match Play Championships will conclude a five-event fall schedule for UNLV, that will include four other tournaments that appeared on last year's slate. UNLV will open the year on Sept. 14 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., the same site where the Rebels captured their 1998 national championship.
UNLV will also face a nationally-ranked field at the Golfweek/PING Preview Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club, site of the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Rebels will also attend familiar favorites like the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational.
