LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Runnin' Rebels will face Illinois in the first round of the 2000 Maui Invitational on Monday, November 20 at 8:30 p.m. PST. The bracket and television schedule for college basketball's premier in-season tournament were announced Wednesday.
Four games will be played each day of the tournament held November 20, 21 and 22, 2000 at the Lahaina Civic Center on the Hawaiian island of Maui. ESPN and ESPN2 will broadcast live six of the tournament's 12 games. UNLV's opening game will be shown on ESPN2.
The eight-team tournament is in its 17th year and, in addition to UNLV, features Arizona, Connecticut, Dayton, Illinois, Louisville, Maryland and host Chaminade. All seven mainland schools are coming off appearances in last season's NCAA Tournament.
Past national champions are slotted in each of the tournament's four first-round games, setting up a possible "mini Final Four" in semifinal play. Connecticut (1999 national champion) and Arizona (1997), could match up in one semifinal while UNLV (1990) and two-time champs Louisville (1980, 1986) could meet in the other bracket.
