The No. 6 UNLV golf team opens the 2000-01 season this weekend at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. The 54-hole tournament will be hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Championship Golf Course (par 72, 7,223 yards), Thursday-Saturday, Sept.14-16.
An impressive tournament field of 22 teams will play 36 holes on Friday and the final 18 on Saturday. The field includes Air Force, Arizona, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Furman, Hawaii, UNLV, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Francisco, Southern California, Southeast Louisiana, UTEP, Texas Tech, Utah, Weber State and Wyoming.
Senior Scott Lander (Kingman, Ariz.), sophomores Brien Davis (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) and Calvin Kupeyan (Tecumseh, ONT/Bradenton (FL) Academy), and freshmen James Oh (Lakewood, Calif.) and Travis Whisman (Reno, Nev./Galena) comprise UNLV's lineup for the week. Sophomore Robert Sul (Torrance, Calif./North) is the alternate.
As a member of the Rebels' 1998 national championship squad, Lander helped UNLV to a then-record score at the Championship Course in Albuquerque. He finished tied for 37th overall at even par in that tournament, but was nine-over in the 1999 Tucker to finish tied for 72nd.
Along with Lander, Davis played in last year's Tucker. He tied for 44th overall, firing one-over par for the tourney and helping the Rebels to a tie for third place in the team standings at 11-over par (291-287-297--875).
Kupeyan returns to collegiate action after an outstanding summer during which he won two amateur tournaments and climbed from No. 68 to No. 23 in the rankings.
Oh and Whisman will make their collegiate debuts this weekend.
Albuquerque also serves as a homecoming for head coach Dwaine Knight, who is a gradaute of New Mexico and coached the Lobos from 1978-87.
