UNLV Returns To Ping Preview

DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 6 UNLV golf team continues its 2000 fall season this weekend at the PING Preview Invitational in Durham, N.C. The 54-hole tournament will be hosted by Duke University at the Duke University Golf Club (par 72, 7,054 yards), on Monday, Sept. 25 and Tuesday, Sept. 26.
The tournament will be played at the same site as the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships and will feature an impressive field, including all 10 of the nation's top ranked teams in the MasterCard Collegegiate Golf Rankings and 14 of the top 20. Additionally, 12 of the 15 schools which participated in the 2000 NCAA Championships.
Along with UNLV, the field includes Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, BYU, Clemson, Duke, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Houston, Kent State, Northwestern, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Christian.
Representing UNLV at the Preview will be senior Scott Lander (Kingman, Ariz.), sophomores Brien Davis (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), Calvin Kupeyan (Tecumseh, ONT/Bradenton (FL) Academy) and Robert Sul (Torrance, Calif./North), and freshman James Oh (Lakewood, Calif.).
The Rebels finished 11th of 18 schools at the 1999 Preview Invitational, held at the Robert Trent Jones Grand National Course in Opelika, Ala. Adam Scott led the way with a two-over par 218 to finish tied for 18th overall. Both Davis and Lander played in last year's preview, finishing 44th and 72nd respectively.
In its last outing, UNLV captured a second-place team finish at the Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., finishing two strokes behind BYU for the title. Kupeyan was the individual runner-up at five-under par, four shots behind BYU's Billy Harvey for medalist honors.
Following the Preview, UNLV will take a couple of weeks off before heading to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Oct. 15-17.
