OKLAHOMA CITY - Day three preliminary time trials are over at the Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, and the stage is set for a close contest between UNLV and BYU this evening.
Dana Penn started things off this morning with a sixth place finish in the women's 400 IM. She turned in a time of 4:33.45.
In the 100 butterfly, Sabrina Ferrari took third in 56.01, while Julie Unrau finished fifth with a time of 56.49.
Lorena Diaconescu and Alyson Noble went 1-2 in the women's 200 free. Diaconescu finished in 1:47.93, a full four seconds ahead of third place Sandy Leaycraft of Colorado State. Noble finished with a personal best time of 1:51.63.
Madalina Tin's personal best 1:04.43 was good for third place in the 100 breast. Carrie Knopp finished in 13th place with a time of 1:07.12.
On the men's side, Paul Valen enters tonight's 400 IM with the third fastest time (4:02.01), while fifth place belongs to Kevin Williams in 4:03.40. Valen's time is a personal best.
UNLV dominated the 100 fly, taking first through fourth and sixth places. Doug Wake finished first (48.08), followed closely by Piotr Krzyskow in second (48.50), David Schick in third (48.64) and Michael Short in fourth (48.72). Wyoming's Robert Boysen broke the UNLV sweep, taking fifth (48.78) ahead of the Rebels' Andrew Livingston who was sixth (49.01). Wake, Krzyskow and Short all recorded personal bests in the event.
Jacint Simon (1:39.22) won the 200 free by only one hundredth of a second over BYU's Jeffery Mason (1:39.23). Quinten Allen took sixth with a personal best time of 1:40.42. Tommy Zauder finished tied for ninth in a personal best time of 1:41.33, while Laurens Vosloo finished thirteenth in 1:42.48.
Quincy Schmidt won the 100 breast in personal best time of 55.25. Ari Berlin took ninth, also swimming a personal best time of 58.63.
The men wrapped up the day with the 100 backstroke. BYU swept first through third in the event. UNLV's David Schick finished seventh in 51.51, followed by Garrett Wood in ninth (51.98), Andy Kapchinski in eleventh (52.55) and Luke Moore in thirteenth (52.99).
The MWC Swimming and Diving Championships conclude Saturday night in Oklahoma City. Tonight's competition is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. CST.
