PALO ALTO, Calif. - UNLV senior distance runner Katie Barto became the first Rebel to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this season with her performance in the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.
Barto, who was the Rebels' only NCAA cross country qualifier this year, finished 15th overall in 16:39, nine seconds better than the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. That time also tops the school record of 16:51 set by teammate Jenni Lopez at the same meet last season.
Also leading the Rebels' efforts on Saturday was sophomore Tianika Sharrieff, who won the high jump, clearing a season-best 5-08.75. That mark is less than two inches short of the NCAA qualifying mark of 5-10.50.
Those are only partial results from the Stanford Invitational, and team scores are not yet available. With more than 5,000 high school, collegiate and Olympic athletes participating in trials and finals on Saturday, first day scores won't be available until after midnight Pacific time.
The meet will conclude on Sunday.
