ABOUT NEW MEXICO
New Mexico (21-29, 11-13 MWC) swept a three-game series with Air Force last weekend, 8-2, 17-3 and 6-0. The Lobos had lost seven straight prior to the Air Force series.
Troy Cairns leads the Lobos offensively, hitting .352 (80-for-227) with a team-leading 19 doubles.He leads the league in hits with 80 and is eighth in batting average at .352.
UNLV leads the overall series with New Mexico 44-29. The Lobos and Rebels have met three times this season with UNM winning two of three in Albuquerque. UNLV won the final contest of the series, sending the Lobos on a seven-game losing streak, the longest in ten years.
HUSTLIN' REBELS
UNLV split a three-game series with Utah last weekend, winning the first two contests 12-11 and 11-10, but dropping the Sunday game 15-6.
Brent Johnson led the Rebels offensively last weekend. He hit .643 (9-for-14) with four doubles and four RBIs.
David Trujillo also swung the bat well, hitting .583 (7-for-12) with five RBIs. He now leads the conference with a 22-game hitting streak.
Trent Kitsch hit .500 (6-for-12) with three home runs and seven RBIs. He amassed a 1.250 slugging percentage in his twelve plate appearances.
TRUJILLO HITTING STREAK
Junior David Trujillo is currently riding a 22-game hitting streak. He picked up at least one hit in 28 of the last 29 games and 32 of the 39 games he has played this year.
Kevin Lofthus holds the UNLV record for the longest hitting streak at 34. Lofthus set the record in the 1989 season.
New Mexico's Scott Candelaria set the Mountain West Conference record for longest hitting streak with 25 games. His collegiate career ended before the streak did.
KITSCH RBIs
Trent Kitsch ranks 12th in the nation with a 1.31 RBI per game average.
He currently holds the second spot in the conference for RBIs with 59. He also shares the second spot in multiple-RBI games with 15.
Versus: Washington State (3,2), Lewis-Clark State (2,2), Kansas State (5), Clemson (2), Oregon State (4), Southern Utah (2), Utah (2,2,4,3), New Mexico (2,4), San Diego State (2), Air Force (4,2).
Kitsch is also third in the conference in home runs with 14. BYU's Matt Carson leads the league with 16.
AUTOMATIC BID
Twenty-nine conferences receive an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. 2001 marks the first season the Mountain West Conference will receive an automatic bid. The winner of the MWC Championships, held in San Diego May 16-19, will receive the automatic bid.
CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
The 2001 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship will be hosted by San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif. All six Mountain West Conference teams will compete in the double-elimination tournament May 16-19. Seedings will be decided by regular season results in conference games.
