LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Thomas Schneiter posted his second upset in as many days before later falling in the semifinals of the 2002 National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.
Schneiter, who was unranked in the preseason poll, shocked No. 13 Marcin Matkowski of UCLA 6-1, 6-0 to begin the day. Schneiter, however, was defeated by another Bruin, Rodrido Grilli, 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals. Grilli, who is also unranked, will play 49th-ranked David Martin of Stanford in Sunday's championship at 10 a.m. Martin upset No. 18 Jean Julien Rojer of UCLA, 6-0, 6-3, and then downed fellow Cardinal Ryan Haviland 6-4, 6-1, to advance.
Of the three Rebels playing in the consolation draw, only Romain Tug earned a victory before falling in the second round.
In doubles play, the Stanford duo of Martin and Scott Lipsky won the championship by nipping the nation's top-ranked tandem, Matkowski and Rojer of UCLA, 9-8.
