Rebel Netters Whitewashed In L.A.

Jan. 29, 2002

LOS ANGELES - The 57th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team was swept 7-0 by third-ranked UCLA in the Rebels' 2002 season debut Tuesday at the L.A. Tennis Center.

The Bruins (3-0), who boast four players ranked in the nation's top 100, opened play by sweeping doubles for one team point. UCLA's No. 1-ranked duo of Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer easily won at the top spot and the other Bruin duos rallied to win their matches, including squeaking out a tie-breaker at the second position.

In singles, only one Rebel pushed his opponent to a third set as Aviram Salomon won the first stanza before being downed by Rodrigo Grilli, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

At the top position, 13th-ranked Matkowski eased past Thomas Schneiter 6-1, 6-4 to avenge a straight-set loss earlier this month to the Rebels' top player in the National Collegiate Tennis Classic held in Las Vegas.

The road does not get much easier for the Rebels as they take on 12th-ranked USC Wednesday in Los Angeles.
