STORYLINE: The UNLV women's golf team continues fall play this 2002-03 season at the Mercedes Benz Women's Intercollegiate in Knoxville, Tenn. The 54-hole tourney begins Friday, Oct. 18, at the Gettysvue Polo Golf and Country Club (Par 72--5,985 Yards). The three-day event will feature one round daily.
ABOUT UNLV: After earning their first-ever top-50 ranking, the Rebels slipped at the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., and consequently fell to No. 54 in this week's ranking. UNLV has to its credit a ninth-place finish of 19 teams at the Dick McGuire Invitational and a 12th-place showing at the Give 'Em Five. However, the Rebels already have head-to-head victories over every MWC opponent this year except 10th-ranked New Mexico.
THE MERCEDES BENZ: The Rebels make their first appearance at the Mercedez Benz Women's Intercollegiate, and not a single player in the lineup has played Gettysvue Polo Course before. UNLV played its first-ever tournament in Tennessee, finishing 14th at the Mason Rudolph Championship.
THE FIELD: The University of Tennessee plays host to 14 other teams: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Furman, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue, Swedish Junior National Team, and UNLV.
THE LINEUP: The Rebels will use the same lineup for the Mercedes Benz: sophomores Christine Hentzner and Hwanhee Lee, and freshmen Elena Kurokawa, Sunny Oh and Young Pak.
HEAD COACH MISSY RINGLER: UNLV women's golf head coach Missy Ringler begins her first year at UNLV. She takes over for Kelley Hester, who left to become the head coach at the Arkansas. An All-Big Eight golfer at Iowa State from 1990-95, Ringler spent the last three seasons as the head coach at the University of Minnesota. She and her husband, Lance, are expecting their first child in December.
UP NEXT: The Rebels wrap up the fall season by hosting the Las Vegas Founders' Women's Collegiate Showdown, the first women's collegiate tournament to be played in Las Vegas. The tournament is slated for Nov. 11-13 at Anthem Country Club in Henderson.
