SEATTLE - Continuing to be one of the top indoor sprinters in the nation, senior Michele Davis topped her season best in the 200-meter dash with a first-place finish of 23.72 seconds at the University of Washington Invitational held at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
The Lansing, Mich. native, beat out her nearest competitor, Annette Wells of Cal State Northridge (24.19), by more than 30 tenths of a second in the race. Her time also marked another NCAA provisional time in the event.
Again, the Rebels placed well in the finals of the women's high jump with sophomore Christine Spence (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and junior Tianika Sharrieff (Euless, Texas) tying for second with Oregon's Jenny Brogdon with a leap of 1.67m (5-5 3/4).
Three third-place finishes were notched by freshman Miesha McClendon (Pasadena, Calif.) in the 60m hurdles (8.91), freshman Halima Decree (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the 60m dash (7.69) and junior Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad) in the 400m dash with a season best 56.49.
UNLV's 4x400m relay team also turned in a season best and provisional time of 3:41.35 to claim first-place honors, beating out the field of Pac-10 and California schools at the meet.
Several members of the squad also competed at the Bill Cosby Invitational in Reno, where UNLV placed eighth with 11 points. Freshman distance runners Jennifer Turk (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Kelley Wright (Houston, Texas) finished in the top 5 of the women's mile run. Turk placed third with a time of 5:25.93, while Wright followed in fifth with a season best 5:36.31.
The Rebels have one more meet remaining on the schedule, before the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships are held on Feb. 21-23 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Next on the Rebels' agenda, the Holiday Inn Classic on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Reno.
