OKLAHOMA CITY - Both the UNLV men's and women's swimming teams will enter the final day of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championships in second place behind BYU. After the third day of competition the men's team racked up 526 points, while the women's team tallied 389 points.
Highlighting Friday's action, Seniors David Schick and Andrew Livingston went 1-2 in the 100 fly. Schick won in 48.24, just four hundredths of a second in front of Livingston.
Senior Jacint Simon won the 200 free in 1:36.89, just missing an automatic invitation to the NCAA championships and setting himself up with a "B" cut time and probable invitation.
Senior Lorena Diaconescu also won the 200 free in 1:47.01. Her time was also a "B" cut time, but she already swam an automatic time earlier this season.
Sophomore Patrick Adams picked up a win in the 100 breast with a time of 55.76. Fellow teammate Quincy Schmidt took third.
Freshman Raluca Udroiu won the women's 400 IM in 4:25.07. She also took second in the 100 back by one hundredth of a second. Colorado State's Kristen Schneider won in 56.10, while Udroiu finished in 56.11. Both are soft cuts for the NCAA championships.
Seven events remain before the Mountain West Conference crowns its men's and women's champions on Saturday night. Prelims begin at 11 a.m., with finals beginning at 6 p.m.
