Lobos Outlast Rebels

LAS VEGAS - New Mexico's John Kowalski won a third-set tiebreaker to give the Lobos a 4-3 win over the 58th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.

The Rebels fell to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West Conference play while UNM improved to 11-7.

The Lobos began the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point.

In singles play, 68th-ranked Rebel Thomas Schneiter downed Divan Coetzee 7-5, 6-0 at the top spot while Romain Tug swept Michael Polasek, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2. UNM got straight-set victories from Bart Scott at No. 3 and David Kowalski at No. 4 to make it 3-2 with two matches remaining. Andreas Maurer tied things for the hosts by winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 6 before John Kowalski outlasted Leslie Eisinga at No. 5, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (4) to clinch the team victory.

The Rebels continue round-robin conference play by taking on No. 30 San Diego State Sunday beginning at noon. The match will mark the final regular-season home appearance for Schneiter, UNLV's only senior in 2002.
