SALT LAKE CITY - The 56th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team closed out the regular season by losing its third straight match, 5-2, to Utah at the Canyons Tennis Club Saturday.
The Rebels fell to 9-11 overall and 2-3 in the league while the unranked Utes improved to 13-10 and 2-3.
Utah began the day by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point. The Rebel duo of Thomas Schneiter and Andreas Maurer did win 8-3 at No. 2.
In singles play, the home team won four of six. UNLV got points from Aviram Salomon, who won 6-3, 6-4 over Nick Yip at No. 3 and Maurer, who earned a tiebreaker victory, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) over Daniel Lohff on court six.
Utah's David Mercier upset 85th-ranked Schneiter at the top spot, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to break the senior star's five-match winning streak. It was only the second loss for Schneiter since January and first to a league opponent this spring.
