WALNUT, Calif. - Splitting time between the legendary Mt. SAC Relays and Long Beach Invitational, the UNLV women's track and field team marked best times at both weekend meets.
Known for "where the world's finest athletes compete," the 44th edition of the Mt. SAC Relays had the Rebels taking home first-place honors in the university/college division of the 4x400 meter relay event. Junior Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, Tenn.), sophomore Christine Spence (Lee's Summitt, Mo.), junior Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad) and junior Michele Davis (Lansing, Mich.) were 2.77 seconds away from breaking the school record in the event with their top time of 3:35.08, which marked a season best for the Rebels' top relay squad.
In individual events, Charles marked a career best in the 400 meters with a time of 53.96 seconds. Her mark ties a season team best time also shared with Davis. Charles finished first in her heat, but placed second overall behind Cal State Northridge's Annetta Wells (53.48). Spence also turned in a career best performance in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.15.
At the Long Beach Invitational, sophomore Cherokee Osborne (Sparks, Nev.) set a career and season best in the 400 meter hurdles clocking in a time of 1:01.97. Junior distance runner Jessica Zarndt (Las Vegas) finished seventh in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:26.37.
Up next, the Rebels will head to the Micron College Open on April 26-27 in Boise, Idaho.
