LAS VEGAS - Freshman Randi Schmidt-Calabrese opened the first day of the UNLV Track and Field Desert Classic with a personal best in the women's hammer throw Friday afternoon at Myron Partridge Stadium / Sheila Tarr Smith Field.
Schmidt-Calabrese (Hamden, Conn.) finished third in the event with a mark of 32.89 meters. Sophomore Heather Harding (Spokane, Wash.) followed in fourth with a toss of 32.79 meters.
In the women's shot put, UNLV's Angeline Gbahi (Ivory Coast, Africa) competed unattached and won the event with a season best mark of 14.52 meters. Harding placed fourth with a distance of 12.50 meters.
The Rebels continue meet competition tomorrow with track and field events beginning at 10 a.m. San Diego State, Southern Utah and Cal State-Dominguez Hills round out the four-team field. Admission is free to the public.
