LAS VEGAS - The time has come and the UNLV women's track and field team is off and running as the Rebels head to the 2002 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Air Force on May 15-18 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
After a seventh place finish in 2001, the Rebels look to improve on last year's placing in team scoring and individual finishes. The multi-events begin on Wednesday, May 15, while the majority of the track and field events UNLV will be competing in starts on Friday, May 17. BYU is favored to win both the men's and women's conference titles.
Going into the conference meet, the Rebels hold four top times in the league. Junior sprinter Michele Davis (Lansing, Mich.) leads the field in the 100 meters with a time of 11.74 seconds and the 200 meters with an NCAA provisional time of 23.12 seconds. Freshman Brigitte Ladouceur (Cayenne, French Guiana) is tops in the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of 13.87 seconds and the 4x400 meter relay team of Davis, sophomore Christine Spence (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and juniors Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad) first with an NCAA provisional time of 3:34.47.
Davis, who redshirted in the 2001 outdoor season, currently ranks fourth nationally in the 200 meters (23.12) and 15th in the 400 meters (52.81), while the relay squad ranks 13th in the nation in the 4x400 meter relay. A total of five Rebels (Davis, Spence, Yates, Charles and freshman Tiffany Sims-McCray (Houston, Texas) as an alternate) will be traveling to the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 29-June 1 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
