COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nine members of the UNLV women's track and field team advanced to the finals of their respective events Friday evening in the preliminaries of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Junior sprinter Michele Davis (Lansing, Mich.) won the preliminaries of the 200 meters in a time of 23.60 seconds to advance to tomorrow's finals. Fellow junior Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad) finished in fourth with a career and season best time of 24.51 seconds. Davis also advanced to the finals of the 100 meters with a time of 11.74 seconds, along with freshman Halima DeCree (Bakersfield, Calif.) who finished right behind with an 11.96.
Charles qualified for the 400 meters finals clocking in a time of 55.07 seconds. In the 800 meters, freshman Tiffany Sims-McCray (Houston, Texas) advanced to the event finals with the fifth fastest time of the day (2:13.43), while freshman walk-on Lindsey Green (Las Vegas) set a career and season best time of 2:22.51, but did not move on to the finals.
Junior hurdler Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, Tenn.) advanced in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.33 seconds and freshman Miesha McClendon (Pasadena, Calif.) followed suit with a qualifying time of 14.70. Sophomore Christine Spence (Lee's Summit, Mo.) qualified for the finals of the 400 meter hurdles with a preliminary time of 60.75 seconds.
In field events, junior Tiffany Smith (Woodland Hills, Calif.) set a new career and season best in the long jump with a sixth-place finish and mark of 5.53 meters (18-01.75). Sophomore Heather Harding (Spokane, Wash.) placed 16th in the shot put with a toss of 12.65m.
Javelin throwers Casey Lektorich (Spokane, Wash.) and Jennifer Gardner (Lakewood, Wash.) finished back-to-back in their specialty event. Lektorich fifth with a throw of 41.86m and Gardner sixth with a mark of 41.19m.
UNLV is currently in eighth with 10 points and will continue conference postseason competition tomorrow with events beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the awards ceremony concluding the meet at 4 p.m.
