BATON ROUGE, La. - UNLV junior sprinter Michele Davis (Lansing, Mich.) placed 10th in the preliminaries of the 200 meters on the first day of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Bernie Moore Stadium.
Davis missed qualifying for the event finals by a mere one hundredth of a second, crossing the finish line at 23.22 seconds. Florida International's Vronique Wilson edged the Rebels' top sprinter with a time of 23.21, good enough for the final qualifying spot. Sophomore Muna Lee, a sprinter for host Louisiana State University, moved on to Saturday's finals with a top time of 22.66 seconds.
UNLV continues competition at the national meet through Saturday, June 1. Davis and junior Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad) will race in the preliminaries of the 400 meters as well as compete in the preliminaries of the 4x400 meter relay with teammates Christine Spence (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, Tenn.) tomorrow.
