Flying Against the Wind

PALO ALTO, Calif. - UNLV women's distance runners Jennifer Turk (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Kelley Wright (Houston, Texas) kept the Rebels on course amid world-class competition at the 2002 Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford University.

Turk, a freshman walk-on, set a career and season best in the 1,500 meters event in a time of four minutes, 52.77 seconds. Wright, also a freshman, set a season best with a time of 5:01.86. Turk finished 32nd, Wright followed behind in 33rd and freshman walk-on Lindsey Green (Las Vegas) 34th with a 5:06.04.

Sophomore sprinter Cherokee Osborne (Sparks, Nev.) placed third in the 400 meters with a 1:00.66, while fellow sophomore Heather Harding (Spokane, Wash.) finished third in the shot put with a mark of 12.84 meters and eighth in the discus with a season best toss of 39.41 meters. Some of the world's best athletes and top collegians competed in the one-day meet.

UNLV continues its weekend on the road, as a separate squad, which did not participate in the Cardinal Invitational, prepares for the Jesse Owens Classic on Sunday, May 5 in Columbus, Ohio.
